One of Southern California's prized small resorts, the charming seaside village of Del Mar stands at the northern gateway of San Diego County, nestled against sloping hills. Del Mar Beach and adjacent Torrey Pines State Peach provide miles of oceanfront walking, surfing, and swimming. Seagrove Park, with its wide expanse of lawn ringed by benches, tables, and recreational equipment, makes it a perfect picnic or special celebration location. Tuesday evening concerts are a staple during summer months, when spectacular sunsets are a matter of course. Bicycle paths and hiking trails wind through surrounding canyons, while the village itself offers high-end shopping and upscale boutiques.
Del Mar's fairgrounds play host to annual thoroughbred racing by day and quarter horse racing by night. The 43-day racing season, July through September, attracts crowds from around the world. Summer in Del Mar is also synonymous with the Del Mar Fair, attracting nearly a million to its exhibits, shows, and grandstand concerts.
From luxury hotels to charming bed and breakfasts, Del Mar reflects a range of cultures and styles within its two square miles, further evidenced by its eclectic mix of restaurants and bars. Incorporated as its own city, with a council of five members, the population of Del Mar proper, around two square miles, is about 5100, though much of the greater Del Mar area lies outside city limits. The area is served by four elementary schools, one junior high, and the nationally recognized Torrey Pines High
School. |
