Founded in 1888, when agriculture was its major business and the community numbered at 800, Escondido -- Hidden Valley -- is located 25 minutes from the coast and about the same distance from downtown San Diego. Its highlights include the largest shopping mall in north San Diego County -- North County Fair, with over 160 specialty shops, 15 restaurants, and 5 major department stores. It's also home to the world-famous San Diego Wild Animal Park, an 1800-acre wild animal preserve featuring a safari monorail, hiking trails, and gift shops. The Iceplex Ice Center houses two Olympic-sized ice-skating rinks and a full exercise complex.
Escondido also enjoys three movie theaters for a total of 22 screens. The $81 million dollar California Center for the Performing Arts houses a 1500-seat concert hall and a 400-seat community theater, plus a 9000-square-foot art museum.
Escondido's recreation program is among the finest in the state, with youth sports and evening adult leagues scheduled year-round. Outdoor recreation includes 20 golf courses and three Lakes -- Dixon, Hodges and Wohlford -- offering a range of picnic, boating, and fishing events. Parks such as Kit Carson, Grape Day, Washington, or Felicita, plus the Daly Ranch, make for great outdoor family events.
