No wonder that a century ago, La Jolla was the apex for a colony of artists who came to paint the village's picturesque coastline -- its craggy shoes, caves, and cliffs -- set against piercing Mediterranean lighting.
Breathtaking views are commonplace in this seaside village -- named "The Jewel" by Native Americans -- from dazzling sunsets off the cliffs of Torrey Pines to a spectacular panoramic view atop Mount Soledad.
The community of La Jolla is as well known for its views as its commitment to art, be it in collections or expression. Home of the award-winning La Jolla Playhouse, founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck (among others), the Playhouse has emerged as a testing ground for future Broadway productions. The Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla, hugs the coastline above the famous Cove, where Sunday strollers, seal-watchers, and tourists promenade. All roads converge in the village of La Jolla, where Prospect Street and Girard Avenue showcase a blend of specialty boutiques, art galleries, European luxury hotels, coffee houses, and five-star restaurants. Shopping in the village rivals Beverly Hills with high-end boutiques such as Nicole Miller and Ralph Lauren. Music lovers appreciate the annual SummerFest, sponsored by the La Jolla Chamber Music Society, which also sponsors free Sunday concerts by the sea at Scripps Park and La Jolla Cove. In addition to breathtaking views and unique architecture, La Jolla's enviable homes are sights themselves, whether they be hillside mansions or quaint seaside cottages.
La Jolla's academic and scientific highlights include the nationally acclaimed University of California San Diego (UCSD), at the forefront of biological and medical research; the Stephen Birth Aquarium-Museum; the Scripps Institution of Oceanography; and the Salk
Institute for Biological Studies.
