The northernmost coastal city in San Diego, Oceanside is a beach resort with more than three and a half miles of coastline. It sports a small-craft harbor housing boats, sportfishing operations, shops, and restaurants. Oceanside lies in the agriculture-rich San Luis Rey Valley, first explored in 1769, followed by the Mission construction in 1798.
Mission San Luis Rey, with its vast fruit orchards and cattle-raising activities, became a Mexican land grant following secularization; the city of Oceanside was founded in the 1880s to coincide with the railroad's arrival. Much of the original property was sold to the U.S. government in 1942 to establish Camp Joseph H. Pendleton Marine Corps base. The town has prospered since, generating revenue from the military along with agriculture and tourism.
Annual events include June's beach-opening celebration, summer concerts in the outdoor amphitheater, September's Rough Water Swim and Harbor Days, November's Mission Christmas Faire, and the Harbor Parade of Lights each December.
